Campaign to Pass and Implement Intro 146 in New York City

June, 2021, after 4 years of NYC rental subsidy vouchers levels being to low to rent all but a very small number of apartments (550 city wide in June, 2021), New York City Council Intro #146 (now Local Law #71) raised the amount of "City Fheps" rental subsidy vouchers to levels matching many New York City apartments meaning that thousands in our shelter system will be able to secure a home by no later than mid-December. The Interfaith Assembly and our partners are calling for these vouchers to be available before the Mid-December deadline and to "fix" an "income cliff" that can result the complete loss of a voucher for increased earning.

Challenges

At the present time, the value of a CityFHEPS voucher is too small to make it useful to actually rent an apartment. Raising the value of the voucher moves us from about 500 qualifying apartments to over 70,000.

The voucher should help us significantly reduce the census in congregate shelter. Moveover, immediate approval of the voucher will reduce the necessity to move people from hotels to shelter and allow people to move right into permanent affordable housing.
